Movie Review: The BFG (2016)

Background:

Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Mark Rylance (BFG), Ruby Barnhill (Sophie), Penelope Wilton (The Queen), and Jemaine Clement (Fleshlumpeater)
Genres: Adventure, Family, and Fantasy

I watched the BFG on Netflix, and I enjoyed it a lot. I may or may not have laughed out loud once or twice (whizzpopping scene).

Plot and Thoughts:

I loved Sophie's character a lot more in the movie for some reason. She was a lot sassier with a little spunk to her.

The dream jars were so beautiful. The BFG had thousands of them and they were all different colors. The dream catching land scene was probably my favorite part of the movie. To get to the dream, the BFG and Sophie jumped into the lake and were transported to dream catching land. Also, it was so mesmerizing to watch a dream being made by the leaves in the tree. It was just all very magical while they were in dream catching land. In the movie, Sophie actually got a designated dream, which comes into play later on in the movie. It did make me sad to watch the other giants crush a lot of the BFG's dream jars.

Sophie tells the BFG that she doesn't dream often because she has insomnia. So he gives her nightmare, which didn't see like something that the BFG would do to her.

The frobscottle scene was actually really funny, like it doesn't take a lot to make me laugh so of course it made me chuckle. I almost pissed myself when the BFG gave frobscottle to some of the people in the queen's castle (even the Queen herself). The best was when the corgis let out a whizzpopper. I also loved the addition of the corgis in the movie.

The snozzcumber was really gross. I don't know how the BFG ate that stuff all of his life.

Giant country was a bit different. There was water in it, which the giants were afraid/hated for some reason. And I don't remember reading about that in the book. There was no yellow land and blue rocks, which I kind of understood because that would be hard to design a set with all yellow land.

We also learn that the BFG had another child that he took before Sophie. And it was that boy who taught him to read and write, but the BFG says it was too late to take him home (insinuating that the other giants ate the boy). I don't think this was in the book, but it did provide a more motivating reason for them to want to get rid of the giants and stop them from eating other humans.

I thought it was funny when the BFG hated coffee and spit it out right on the queen's servants right after Sophie was teaching him manners. The servants then just casually walked away wet and steaming. Also, I noticed Mr. Tibbs was just as stressed in the movie which was kind of funny.

There was an alternate ending, which I didn't like, because I loved the ending of the book. In the movie, Sophie ends up living in the queen's castle and the BFG had given her Sophie's dream. And the BFG lives in Giant Country alone and grows an abundance of different crops and he is writing a book, but still listens to Sophie when she talks.

Accuracy to Book:

I have to say, it was very accurate to the book, and there were lines in it that I know were word for word from the book. It was a fun, heartfelt movie that I had thoroughly enjoyed.

I give this movie a 8/10 stars.
